Jaguar as ART:

Stephan Salmieri, photographer

Jaguar design has always had a human touch to it. Feline in nature and form were the characteristics of most modern Jaguar automobiles. Enzo Ferrari described the E-Type as the most beautiful car ever. In 1985 Mike Cook, Jaguar Cars USA PR Manager, commissioned Stephan Salmieri, NY photographer, to capture, in photographs, the ART of PERFORMANCE advertising marketing campaign. Mike was a good friend mine and he asked me if I could assist Salmieri in securing automobiles for the photo-shoot.

I was president of the JOCLA at the time and our club was active in all areas including interesting collection of member cars. Salmieri and his wife Sydnie, a photographer also, came out to Los Angeles and spent two weeks with me. We scouted photo locations, contacted car owners, and put together a photo shooting schedule. The cars that are represented in this collection are a few of the note worthy pictures that were used in the ART of PERFORMANCE campaign. Salmieri used black and white film, 2 ¼” HASELBLAD camera, 35mm NIKON, and an 8X10 camera. The photo collection is part of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

The photo locations included the Queen Mary, Long Beach, El Dorado Park Long Beach, Wild Animal Park San Diego, locations in Northern California, Monterey and San Francisco. Member cars: Mark Mayuga XK-120 and 3.8S, Sandor Mayuga E-Type S1 OTS, Holly Hollenbeck SS 100, Jack Rabel SS Touring DHC, and others.

Enjoy this collection of Jaguars as art forms and automotive sculpture and architecture.
